Learn about Kerry Blue Terriers Pet Insurance

Standing about 19 inches at the shoulder, the Kerry Blue Terrier is one of the largest terriers registered with the American Kennel Club. This terrier is an excellent watchdog and family companion. Commonly nicknamed Kerry, this alert and adaptable terrier weighs up to 40 pounds.

Kerry was developed in the mountainous area of County Kerry. The breed is named after the county. Kerry was formerly a working terrier used in killing rodents, guarding homestead and hunting small game and birds. The breed has also been used in herding cattle and sheep. The breed was recognized by AKC in 1924 but it first appeared in the Westminster show in 1922.

Before purchasing Kerry Blue Terrier pet insurance, it is important for the pet owner to research the available policy options in order to choose the best policy for his pet. The right pet insurance for your dog should be broad and should cover the pet’s hospitalization, illness, injury, surgery, diagnostic tests, emergency care, and so on.

It is also necessary to take out Kerry Blue Terriers pet insurance coverage early. Pets become more prone to chronic illnesses and genetic diseases as they grow old. The problem is, most pet insurance companies in Canada do not cover pre-existing conditions. In other words, once the pet is diagnosed with a medical condition before the policy’s start date, the condition will be excluded from the Kerry Blue Terriers pet insurance policy and will not be covered.

Why Kerry Blue Terriers Pet Insurance Is Important

Like most dogs, Kerry Blue Terriers may be susceptible to certain genetic diseases. Most of these genetic diseases tend to manifest more as the pet grows old. Medical conditions common to the breed include cataracts, entropion, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, also known as dry eye, and so on.

On the low-end, most of these medical conditions will cost at least $3,000 in veterinary treatment and care. Although veterinary treatment is much cheaper than human medicine, the cost of the treatment could become very steep especially in procedures requiring multiple surgeries. This is why you should take out Kerry Blue Terriers pet insurance as soon as possible.

Kerry Blue Terriers Pet Insurance News

A Kerry Blue Terrier, Mick won the coveted Best in Show prize at the 127th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2003. The Best in Show victory at Westminster means that the dog won thousands of other dogs.

Mick’s good looks and Irish charm made him the best choice among the 10,000 crowds at Madison Square Garden. His owner Marilu Hansen of New Jersey cheered him on as he performed wonderfully before the audience.

The Kerry Blue Terrier, born Torums Scarf Michael, has won more than 113 Best in Show titles, however, the victory at the Westminster Dog Show was special. Mick also had a major win at Crufts in England and the AKC/Eukanuba Invitation Championship. After the victories, Mick became dog-tired and so his handler, Bill McFadden had to take him out for a vacation in California.

The six-and-a-half-year-old dog did not clinch the top prize in 2002 because he was jumpy, and so he lost the title to the miniature poodle Surrey Spice Girl.

Furthermore, Mick has also bred his own family of winners. It is interesting to note that twelve of his twenty champion children won championship titles in 2002.
