The Town of Whitby or Whitby Township was named after Whitby, Yorkshire, England, a seaport town. The town is located in the Durham Region, Southern Ontario. It is situated to the east of Ajax and west of Oshawa. Whitby is the headquarters of the Durham Region. According to the 2016 Canadian census, it had a population of 128, 277. Furthermore, the town is referred to as the commuter suburb in the eastern Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and it is about 20 kilometers to the Toronto borough of Scarborough.
Many residents of Whitby work in other communities in the Greater Toronto Area; most are employed by the General Motors Canada located in Oshawa which is the major employer in the Durham Region. However, the town of Whitby also has some companies including a steel mill operated by Gerdau Ameristeel, a major warehouse for Liquor Control Board of Ontario and a retail support center operated by Sobeys, Automodular Assemblies, McGraw-Hill Ryerson, Lear Corporation and many more.
The northern part of Whitby includes rural settlements and communities like Brooklin, Ashburn, Myrtle Station, and Myrtle. However, the southern region is mainly urban centers and also an economic center. In addition, the municipality has several cultural assets such as Whitby public library, Camp X, Whitby brass band, Durham Council for the arts, Whitby Heritage Day, Whitby Courthouse Theater and so forth.
