LGBTQ travelers risk facing homophobia while visiting The Bahamas, the Government of Canada warns.

According to an advisory posted on December 20, 2018, on the Government of Canada’s website, the Bahamian law does not go against sexual acts between individuals of the same sex but homosexuality is not a widely acceptable act. As a result, LGBTQ travelers should be wary of the risks involved while traveling to The Bahamas.

Even though homosexuality was legalized in The Bahamas in 1991, it is still widely discriminated against. Erin Greene and Alex D’Marco support the travel advisory saying that they understand where Canada was coming from. Greene described the advisory as sound and reasonable while D’Marco talked about how LGBTs in The Bahamas cannot advance in their career, cannot access hormones, medications and marriages and neither can they rely on the police when necessary.
