Quebec Auto Insurance Overview

Quebec logo

The province of Quebec offers both public and private auto insurance. The public insurance is offered by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) while the private plan can be obtained from private auto insurance companies. Quebec auto insurance is the lowest of all Canadian provinces and territories with an average plan of $661 according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada 2017 report.

With its low average auto insurance plan, most Quebecers do not bother about shopping around for cheaper coverage. But you can save hundreds of dollars a year simply by shopping around for a more affordable policy especially in the private plan.

Although Quebec already has affordable coverage, the major reason why most Quebecers don’t bother about shopping around is the time it usually takes. However, with the services offered by insurdinary.ca, you can compare policy options and shop around for coverage in the same amount of time it would take you to get just one coverage.

Quebec Auto Insurance News

According to Transport Minister Julie Boulet, the Quebec government will not approve any major public auto insurance rate increase like those proposed by SAAQ.

As a way to compensate for the over $1 billion debt that the automobile insurance board is running, SAAQ recommended an increase in rate up to 300% for auto insurance. The report stated that had a deficit of $500 million in 2017. The debt was incurred irrespective of the $700 million finances it caused the board to pay out $1.1 billion to compensate accident victims last year.

According to Boulet, it is necessary to make changes but it will not be severe. The provincial government intended to look into the recommendations made by the board and increase the rate in such a way as to decrease the debt while not impacting heavily on the drivers’ pockets.
