Data from the Region of Waterloo Public Health shows that Kitchener has the highest number of deaths and also the highest age-standardized mortality rate per 100,000 population, followed by Cambridge in the Waterloo Region from 2010 to 2012. In 2012, Kitchener recorded 1,492 deaths and had a 743.5 age-standardized mortality rate. Cambridge and Waterloo recorded 827 and 525 deaths respectively and 711.1 and 551.8 mortality rates.

Unmarked graves in Waterloo Region’s cemeteries are littered with unclaimed dead. You can walk by any of the unmarked graves without knowing that someone who does not have a friend, relative or community to take responsibility for them was buried there.

A lot of deceased people in the Waterloo Region are buried by the regional municipality in the cemetery every year because no one claimed responsibility for them but Michelle Glendinning says that no one is truly unclaimed.

The funeral director at Henry Walser Funeral Home in Kitchener says that their funeral home claim the unclaimed people, take them in and look after them. He said that the funeral home will always host a small service for the unclaimed dead before burying them. Glendinning added that people should be treated with respect even though they are dead.

A lot of efforts are made to find a loved one who can bury the dead. In some cases, it might take weeks to find someone but sometimes no one will agree to take responsibility. Preliminary data from the Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario shows that 421 unclaimed dead people were recorded in 2018, double the figure for 2012.

The reasons for the rising number of unclaimed dead people is not known but Cheryl Mahyr, the issues manager with the chief coroner’s office said it could be because of an increase in ageing adults and population growth.
