Brantford is an Ontarian city, located in the southwestern part of the province. Based on the 2016 Canadian population census, Brantford has a city population of 97,496 and a CMA population of 134,203. The city was established on May 31, 1877, and founded on the Grand River. It has a municipality of its own, independent of the county’s municipality government. Brantford is surrounded by the Brant County and was named after “Joseph Brant”, a Mohawk chief and key figure in American Revolutionary War. The city is commonly known as the “Telephone City”.
The first telephone factory was established in Brantford in 1870. Furthermore, the electric telephone was also invented in the city. For the first half of the 20th century, the city developed as an important industrial center in Canada and it was formerly the third Canadian city with the highest cash value of manufactured goods exported. As of December 2016, the city recorded an unemployment rate of 4.7%, the second lowest unemployment rate in Ontario.
Brantford has several cultural assets and entertainments. Some of the local museums in the city include Brant Museum and Archives, Bell Homestead, Personal Computer Museum, Canadian Military Heritage Museum and Woodland Cultural Center. Notable annual events in the city include the Brantford Kinsmen Annual Ribfest held in August, Brantford International Villages Festival held in July, the Chili Willy Cook-Off held in February and so forth.
