The Health Department of the Halton Region that a bat found in Burlington had rabies. This confirmation came after a test result on Monday, October 1, 2018. According to the health officials, it is the first case of rabies found in the region this year. Moreover, the bat was discovered in the Upper Middle Road and Appleby Line area.

Rabies is a deadly viral disease transmitted through the saliva of infested animals, usually on the bite or on scratch by such an animal. The disease could cause death, especially if it is not treated fast before the symptoms show up.

In a press release from the Medical Officer of Health in the Halton Region, Dr. Hamidah Meghani, she ur Meghani, she encouraged Halton residents to avoid any form of contact with bats as well as other wild animals. She also asked residents to vaccinate their pets.

Dr. Hamidah further stated that residents who have had any form of contact with bats should contact a physician and call the Health Department as soon as possible.
