Coquitlam Health News

British Columbia desperately needs more family physicians. A healthcare center in Coquitlam, Foothills Medical Clinic, allows patients seeking doctor service to line up on the first week of each month. The doctor’s office does not accept new patients at any other time and in fact, it is popular because it is one of the few doctor’s offices allowing patients’ intake.

Some patients complained that they waited from 6 am to 8 am just to sign up for medical services. However, the wait is nothing compared to what is obtainable in getting a general practitioner.

A family physician at the practice, Darryl Ableman, noted that he is aware of the problem and that is why he keeps accepting new patients. He also pointed out that he does not see the crisis getting better. Ableman said several factors are responsible for the problem; some of which include the fact that doctors are retiring and there are not enough new doctors to replace them and also incentives used to encourage doctors have been cancelled.

The B.C premier John Horgan blamed the Liberals for the ongoing problem. He said that the previous government failed in delivering on their supposed program to have general practitioners for every patient in the province but the current government is trying to overhaul the health care system within three years.
