Halifax is the capital of the province of Nova Scotia. It is commonly known as Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM). Halifax municipality has a population of 403,131; however, the urban area centered on Halifax Harbour has a population of 316,701. The history of Halifax can be traced to four former municipalities, namely, Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County. These municipalities were merged in 1996 to form the present Halifax.
Several private sector companies and government services are concentrated in Halifax. This makes the city a major economic center in Atlantic Canada. The major economic generators in the city include IMP Group, Bell Aliant, the Department of National Defense, the Nova Scotia Health Authority, as well as government, universities, and banks. The municipality’s rural area has several resource industries which include fishing, mining, natural gas extraction, forestry, and agriculture.
Majority of Halifax residents are Christians (about 71.49%). Minor religious groups include Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikh, and so forth. Furthermore, the city of Halifax is a major cultural center in Nova Scotia and the Atlantic provinces in general. It has several art galleries, museums and theatres, and so forth. Some of the top attractions in Halifax include Symphony Nova Scotia, the Khyber, Halifax Pop Explosion, Neptune Theatre, the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic and so forth.
