Hamilton is an Ontarian port city, located at the west of Lake Ontario and about 75 kilometers to the southwest of Toronto. It is the third-largest city in Ontario and the ninth-largest in Canada. More than 25% of the residents of Hamilton are born outside Canada. The city has a population of 536,917 and a metro population of 747,545. The city and its metropolitan area have a land area of 1,138.11 and 1,371.76 square kilometers respectively.
The city of Hamilton was incorporated on June 9, 1846, and it was named after George Hamilton who conceived the town of Hamilton on purchasing farm holdings of James Durand in the early 1800s.
Hamilton’s economy is primarily based on manufacturing. As a matter of fact, the Toronto-Hamilton region is considered as the most highly industrialized area in Canada. Furthermore, up to 60% of Canada’s steel is produced by Dofasco and Stelco in Hamilton. This has earned the city the name “the Steel Capital of Canada”.
Also, Hamilton is rich in culture and attractions. It has several local attractions which include the HMCS Haida National Historic Sites, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, the Royal Botanical Gardens, the African Lion Safari Park, the Canadian Football Hall of Fame and so forth.
