Kingston is an Ontarian city, located in the eastern part of the province. The city is situated halfway between Toronto and Montreal. It is commonly known as the “Limestone City” because of the various inheritance structures built with local limestone in the city.
The city had a population of 123,798 in 2016, 0.35% increase from its population in 2011 (123,363). Kingston’s Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) had a population of 161,175 in 2016, 1% increase from its population in 2011 (159,561). On February 10, 1841, Kingston was designated as the first capital of the United Province of Canada. However, its time as the capital city of Canada lasted till 1844, however, till date the city of Kingston is still an important military installation. Until 1998, the city was the county seat of Frontenac County but today is a separate municipality in the County
About 66% of Kingston residents are Christians, primarily Roman Catholics; other religious groups in Kingston include Islams, Jews, Hindus and so forth. Kingston’s economy relies primarily on its public sector establishments and institutions. Some of the important sectors in the city include government, health care, culture, tourism, research and development, manufacturing and so forth.
The city is renowned for its interesting culture. Kingston has several festivals throughout the year. The festivals include Artfest, the Kingston Buskers’ Rendezvous, Feb Fest, the Skeleton Park Arts Festival, the Wolfe Island Music Festival the Kingston Jazz Festival, and so forth.
