Langley Health News

The first ever dementia village in Canada, dubbed ‘The Village’, is set to open in Langley, BC next year. The Village will comprise six, single-storey cottage-style homes and a community center. It will house 78 dementia patients which include people suffering from various diseases that degenerate the brain and associated with aging such as Alzheimer’s disease. Furthermore, The Village will consist of 72 specially trained staff to take care of the patients.

According to the project leader, Elroy Jespersen, The Village got its inspiration from the first ever dementia village in the world, in the Netherlands, known as Hogeweyk. He further pointed out that the project is an extension of other assisted and extended care communities he has designed and developed over the past 29 years he had been in the practice.

The Village is situated at the Old Bradshaw Elementary School site - 3920 198th St and according to Jespersen, the project should be completed by April 2019.  The Village is unlike the traditional nursing home. It allows residents to have a coffee, shop, walk their dog, get a hair cut, and participate in other activities such as gardening, all by themselves.

According to Jespersen, the cost of living in The Village would not be cheap. Although he had not finally worked out the final numbers, he estimated that it would cost $190 to $245 per day for each person (or $6000 - $7500 per month).

Moreover, the provincial healthcare plans to establish another dementia village in Metro Vancouver on the St. Vincent’s Hospital site at Heather Street and West 33rd. But this could take years to open.
