Lethbridge Health News

As of July 20, authorities in Lethbridge have shut down a community pool nine times since the start of summer due to series of fecal contamination. Families are being reminded about the health dangers that come with such incidents.

According to Alberta Health Services, the situation could pose untold dangers to people using the pool because germs like cryptosporidium and e.coli can be spread through the medium. This can easily occur when an ill person does not shower before using the water, such an ill person having diarrhea or untrained children having a bowel movement while in the water.

Pool staff can initiate a clear protocol immediately if they learn about the incident but if they don’t or don’t respond on time, the material can be mixed with the water and could be very risky to the pool users.

Parents who take their children to the pool are in total agreement with the preventive measures taken. A parent, Alycia Poffenroth, said she doesn’t mind how often the pool gets closed down. According to health officials, a lot of dangerous germs are killed when the pool is chlorinated but cryptosporidium (or Crypto) may still survive in the water for days. Such water can cause diarrhea if swallowed.
