Mississauga Health News

A recently released report from the Public Health Agency of Canada stated that influenza activity increased slightly between the week of October 14 and 20 (week 42). However, it remained at inter-seasonal level across Canada.

More so, influenza activity surpassed the seasonal threshold in week 43; the week of October 21 to 27. This indicates the onset of influenza season at the national level. Furthermore, it implies that influenza might start earlier this year than it does in recent years.

The Peel Health Activity Report noted two new cases of influenza A on October 13 in Peel Region. This means that a total of four cases of Influenza have been confirmed. Moreover, up to 3.3% of emergency room visit in Peel hospitals and 2.6% student absenteeism across Peel elementary schools constitute illnesses related to Influenza.

However, PHAC noted that several regions in Canada report zero influenza activity but irregular flu activity was reported in 16 regions including Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Quebec. Moreover, a majority of the 34 regions reported no influenza activity and every indicator of influenza activity is at low. In particular, Mississauga and Brampton report low levels of influenza.
