Montreal is the second most populous city municipality in Canada, after Toronto, and the most populous municipality in the province of Quebec. It is named after Mount Royal but was originally known as Ville-Marie or “City of Mary”.
As of 2016, the population of Montreal was 1,704,694; however, the Montreal metropolitan area had up to 4,098,927 in population. Furthermore, the metropolitan area has 1,902,044 in the urban agglomeration which includes every municipality on the Island of Montreal.
49.8% of Montreal residents speak French. Moreover, French is the official language of the province, however, 22.8% of the population speak English while 18.3% speak other languages. Furthermore, 65.8% of the Montreal Census Metropolitan Area speaks French whereas 15.3% speak English.
Montreal is one of the most important cities in Canada due to its economic strength. It is a center for aerospace, technology, finance, commerce, education, tourism, food, art, design, fashion, gaming, to mention a few. Montreal is one of the most culturally rich cities in Canada. Monocle Magazine termed the city as “Canada’s Cultural Capital”. It also has several festivals, the largest of which is the Montreal International Jazz Festival; others include Pop Montreal, Montreal Fireworks Festival, Fierte Montreal and so forth.
