Oshawa Health News

The Media Officer and Commissioner of Health for Durham Region, Dr. Robert Kyle, is pushing for a publicly funded oral health program for adults and seniors with low income. This is in line with the promise made by the Ontario Premier, Doug Ford, during the provincial election.

The report written by Kyle to the regional council outlined the impact of oral health on the quality of life as well as its effect on the mental, physical and social well-being as well as the costs to the healthcare system.

Various other municipalities in Ontario hope to provide free oral health care to adults and seniors with low income. According to Dr. Patricia Abbey, municipalities like Toronto, Halton, Ottawa, and Peel have programs targeted at adults and seniors with low income.

Abbey further pointed out that most dental professionals in the province have been advocating for such a program for years and they are happy for the development. Moreover, the program will make it easy to treat dental diseases such as oral cancers, periodontal disease, and decay in their early stage.
