Founded on June 24, 1497, established on August 5, 1583, and incorporated on May 1, 1888, St. John’s is the capital and largest city of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Based on the 2016 Canadian population census, its city population is 108,860 and its metro population is 205,955. Furthermore, St. John’s has a city land area of 446.06 square kilometers and a metro land area of 804.63 square kilometers. As a result, it has a city and metro population densities of 244.1 per square kilometers and 255.9 per square kilometers respectively.
The city’s nearness to the ocean and its role as the capital of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador significantly influence its economy. The city’s civil service play an enormous role in the stability of the economy and also in the expansion of its labor force. The largest employer of labor in the city is the provincial government, while the second largest is Memorial University. Furthermore, St. John’s is the center of the oil and gas industry in Eastern Canada and is named as one of the 19 World Energy Cities. It is home to the headquarters and major regional operations of several multinational oil companies such as ExxonMobil Canada, Chevron, Husky Energy, Suncor Energy, Staoil and so forth.
