Thunder Bay is an Ontarian city, located in the Thunder Bay District. It is the seat of the Thunder Bay District, the most populated city in the Northwestern part of Ontario and the second most populated (after Greater Sudbury) in Northern Ontario. Thunder Bay has a city population of 107,909 and a metro population of 121,621, based on the 2016 Canadian population census. The city’s name was derived from the great Thunder Bay at the head of Lake Superior. Furthermore, the city is also known as the “Canadian Lakehead” or just “Lakehead”.
A lot of the largest employers in the city of Thunder Bay are in the public sector. Since it is the largest city in Northwestern Ontario, Thunder Bay is the administrative, commercial and medical center of the region. The private largest employer in the city is Resolute Forest Products with over 1,500 employees. Furthermore, the Government of Ontario, the City of Thunder Bay, the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Center, and the Lakehead District School Board also employs more than 1,500 people.
The city is also notable for its arts and culture. Thunder Bay was named the “Cultural Capital of Canada” in 2003. The city has a diverse population and these populations are represented by several cultural centers across the city; examples include the Scandinavia House, the Polish Legion, the Finnish Labor Temple, the Italian Cultural Center, and so forth. The city also has several theatres, museums, and art galleries.
