Jamie Richardson, a Yukon woman, says she is angry that PetSecure refused to cover her dog’s injury despite she has paid monthly premiums for four years.

“It just feels shocking to know that this company was not there for me when I needed them the most”, she says.

Jamie has a seven-year-old Akita breed known as Muddy. Muddy tore a ligament in a hind leg while running in the woods near Whitehorse. The vet told Jamie that that is a common injury in the territory.

The cost of the treatment was $4,200. When Jamie filed a claim to be reimbursed 80 percent of the cost, PetSecure denied the claim citing a clause in the policy that the coverage would be denied if the dog is injured while “jumping, running, slipping, playing or tripping”.

But Jamie argued that this takes away from him being a dog. “I think it defeats the principle of pet insurance”, she added. However, Canada’s largest pet health insurer had to review the file and agreed to pay Jamie’s claim after Go Public requested an interview.

PetSecure said in a letter addressed to Jamie that they decided to pay the claim because the Akita dog “Muddy” has been part of their family for a long time.
