A dog expert for the police German state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), Gunther Bonke, said that the German Shepherd is slowly being replaced by the Belgian Shepherd. Belgian Shepherd is considered to be more dependable and robust than German Shepherd, Bonke said.

While only 26 German Shepherd dogs still work with the NRW police, 281 Belgian Shepherds work with the police, Bonke said. Some German states do not breed their own dogs, so when bought in bulk, the Belgian shepherd is not just cheaper but more attractive.

Since 1988, NRW, which borders Belgium, has been breeding Belgian Shepherd. Over the years, the police found out that the dogs were more courageous and healthier than the German shepherd. Unlike German shepherds which are very limited to security purposes, Belgian Shepherds can also be used as sniffer dogs.

Even Germany’s federal police have started shifting towards Belgian shepherds but they still keep other breeds like the Alsatian. A federal police spokesman said: “we are not planning exclusively with these dogs in the future”.
