After a mysterious and sudden illness suspected to be caused by poison-laced hot dogs, a Delta B.C. woman June Mark said she had to put down her beloved Bernese mountain dog, Kleo.

Mark said she noticed something was wrong with the dog when she was about to take a walk with her. She said the dog throws up everything when it ran inside the house. “She was falling over, staggering, foaming at the mouth, and walking into the walls”, she added.

Over the next four days, the dog’s condition got worse. It suffered several seizures the subsequent days and a veterinarian confirmed that there was little hope the dog will survive. Mark said she arranged for the vet to come and put her out of her misery. She added that she will miss Kleo.

Hot dog chunks were found in Kleo’s vomit and Mark said she is sure they are responsible for the death. She also suspected that the meat was tainted with antifreeze and that they were deliberately placed in her yard. Police officers arrived to take a statement from Mark. They also collected photos and canvassed for information at the neighborhood.

A conviction for poisoning a domestic animal carries up to a five-year-old sentence under the Criminal Code. Under the British Columbia’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, charges carry a fine up to $75,000, up to two years of imprisonment or both.
