Often described with the word “merry”, the English Cocker Spaniel is a compact and silky-coated bird dog known to be responsive, energetic and merry. The medium-sized long-eared dog breed has a happy disposition. If you can give your dog the exercise he needs, he can serve as a great companion. Although he may be stubborn at times, Cocker Spanie as he is always called is intelligent.

The English Cocker Spaniels are bird dogs or gundogs. They are retrievers, pointers, setters, and spaniels. The word “spaniel” is derived from “Spanish”. In other words, the English Cocker Spaniel was developed from Spanish dog stocks. Before the invention of reliable hunting rifles, bird hunters used the Cocker Spanie together with bows, nets and sometimes falcons to hunt birds.

The breed is given the name “Cocker” because of their use in hunting woodcock in England. Cocker Spaniels are wonderful dogs highly treasured by their breeders. Emilie Boyer feels satisfied spending time with dogs even though she doesn’t have one. Boyer registered as a pet sitter with Pawshake, an online service that connects pet owners with pet sitters, dog walkers, home boarding and daycare solutions within the community.

Boyer loves dogs and grew up with dogs but she’s not sure about getting a dog of her own.

Rates for pet sitting starts at $15 per night, including complimentary insurance, constant customer support, and regular photo updates. Pawshake co-founder Tanguy Peers said that the company retains a 19 percent contribution for sitters.

Prospective clients can access pet sitters’ online profiles but they are encouraged to meet them in person ahead of time. Pawshake vets pet sitters when they sign up and there is ongoing vetting once people have registered.

The two founders of Pawshake Peers and Dries Coucke both worked together at eBay and Kijiji. Coucke created the company’s concept when his father was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2009 and the family needed help to take care of his parents’ dog, Ibeau.

He had previously founded a non-profit website to help find homes for rescue pet, pets.be. Pawshake has about 1,000 sitters in Canada and operates in 15 countries. Peers said they are developing more and more websites which focus on one category.
