English Springer Spaniels Pet Insurance News

After he passed his training tests for detecting C. difficile, two-year-old Angus, an English Springer Spaniel, was introduced at Vancouver General Hospital and would be sniffing out Clostridium difficile or C. difficile.

The disease attacks people whose digestive tracks have been made vulnerable by antibiotics. C. difficile is the most common cause of infectious diarrhea in long-term care facilities and hospitals.

Health Minister Terry Lake said in a statement that they strive to find ways to provide better care but sometimes the answer is not more technology but a dog. Interestingly, Angus is the first certified dog in Canada that has been enlisted to detect bacteria in hospitals. During a demonstration for the media, the dog was issued a hospital ID card.

Ultraviolet light is normally used to find the bacteria spores but Angus is extremely precise and works fast. Dr. Elizabeth Bryce, an infection specialist, said that the dog’s keen nose is a major part of the hospital’s strategy to fight infection.

Bryce said they now target areas. If there is a cluster of cases, they could bring Angus in and he could tell if there are any hidden reservoirs. This will allow them to do additional cleaning. Angus’ trainer Teresa Zurberg said that the dog can find C.difficile in areas that would have gone unnoticed.

As soon as the dog is detected, a state-of-the-art robot that makes use of ultraviolet light would be used to disinfect 99.9% of the C. difficile spores in the area or patient room.
