Poodles Pet Insurance News

Poodles used to be everywhere in France but their population has dramatically reduced. Michael Balter, a long-time American resident of Paris recalled that the breed was ubiquitous in the 1980s. It was everywhere, in rich and poor districts alike, Balter said.

The poodle is the world’s best known French dog breed that was initially used for hunting ducks. It is surprising that the breed has fallen out of favor in its native land.

According to figures from the Société Centrale Canine (SCC), France currently favors the Belgian Shepherd, a close cousin of the German shepherd. German shepherd remains the second most favored dog in the country.

Also, poodles are not among the top twenty popular dogs in France. Furthermore, poodle crossbreeds such as Cockapoo (poodle-Cocker spaniel cross) or the Labradoodle (poodle-Labrador retriever cross) are also not common.

The statistics from SCC is only on pedigree poodles, known as caniches in French, and so it doesn’t refer to the number of impure poodles there are.

Only 1,294 poodle births were registered with the SCC in 2016, however, SCC registered a whopping 11,267 births for Belgian shepherds.

Poodles are described as the world’s second most intelligent breed, only behind Border Collie. Mr. Viot owner of a poodle named Clovis agrees with this. He describes his dog as “good-natured, very loyal, intelligent, and docile”.

But why has the breed fallen out of favor in its native land? Some poodles owners in France said that greedy breeders and profiteers took unfair advantage of the breed’s peak in popularity towards the end of the last century. They overproduced lesser quality dogs prone to barking and biting as well as bad temper.
