As a result of what could be labeled as one of the biggest highway vehicle pileups in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador, Obi was lost in the world. But the lost Shih Tzu has made it back safely.

When driving with her two boys and the family dog on February 18, Tanya Cassell Pardy’s car became one of the 15 vehicles that piled up on the Trans-Canada Highway at Birchy Narrows east of Deer Lake. The family was returning from a visit with Cassell’s father in Hampden when the snow squalls occurred.

Cassell Pardy said it was instant. I could not believe it. One second it was sunny, then the next second I couldn’t see a thing. Before I knew it, a crash happened ahead of me and we went full into a transport truck, she said.

Having survived the head-on crash, the family was rear-ended by another vehicle. Although they were shaken and bruised, the family survived the traffic, crash, and trucks. Cassell and her two kids were safe but Obi was nowhere to be found. Although she was devastated about the dog, Cassell’s first priority was to get her sons away from the scene.

Cassell posted on Facebook about Obi asking anybody in the area to keep an eye out for the dog. She said she posted in hopes of getting his body back to be able to get some closure. Thankfully, the post was shared all over the province. A married couple on the west coast spotted the dog near the crash. The wanted to lure the dog over after the crash but he was scared and ran away.

As a result, Cassidy’s husband Dean and his father-in-law picked up the Shih Tzu’s track and finally found him out there in the wild, almost frozen.
