Scientists try to find out if neurological defects in Brazilian babies have any connection to the Zika virus. The South American country is dealing with pandemic levels of Zika virus. As a result of the virus, health officials have issued travel warnings, especially to pregnant women.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised pregnant women against traveling to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2016. There were 14 countries included on the travel advisory but the health officials say that the list is growing.

Canadian researchers project that the disease could make an entrance to Florida, Mexico, Southern Texas, and the Caribbean which are all popular vacation destinations for snowbirds.

In 2013 and 2015, two cases of the Zika virus was discovered in Alberta. Both Albertans were affected outside Canada. Jason Tetro, Canadian microbiologist explained that mosquitoes are the perfect vector for the virus since they normally don’t suffer from having the virus in them and they are blood transfusers.

The virus first appeared in Brazil in May 2015.  Health officials noted that there has been an increase in birth defects in the country months after the first appearance. As a matter of fact, the virus is suspected to cause over 3,500 babies born in Brazil to have microcephaly.
