Croatia Travel Insurance News

A Toronto woman and former Toronto Argos cheerleader, Anna Leibenko was stranded in Croatia hospital after falling from a boat and hitting her head. Anna was unconscious at the accident scene and suffered internal bleeding. Being in a coma and having an internal injury, she was placed on life support. She also had face and head fractures.

Leibenko was taken by helicopter to the closest hospital in Split, Croatia where she was treated. However, the hospital administrators informed her family that she will take care of her treatment if she did not provide documentation for health insurance but unfortunately Anna did not have a travel insurance policy.

The cost of the air ambulance required to bring Anna home was CAD$93,000 and the amount required to pay her medical bills was more than CAD$20,000.

Canadians are advised to have comprehensive a Croatia travel insurance policy before they travel out of Canada to cover medical expenses and the cost of hospitalization abroad.
