A Winnipeg bride, Stephanie Sarlakis, who travelled with her husband, Nikolaos Sarlakis, to Greece for her dream wedding and honeymoon says it has all become a nightmare after her husband became ill, had two major surgeries and battled with pneumonia in a hospital in Athens.

The couple travelled to Greece on May 11, 2017, to have a small wedding reception with Nikolaos family in Salomina, Greece. The two married in Winnipeg in January 2017 but wanted to celebrate with the family and also tour the Greek islands on their honeymoon. They also planned to return to Winnipeg on June 9, 2017, but now they are on the hook for thousands of dollars in additional costs.

Stephanie who called it her “honeymoon nightmare” said they had been planning for the trip and looking forward to it for a year and it was supposed to be their dream honeymoon. She exclaimed that it has been awful. Stephanie had never imagined going through something like that in a million years.

The couple had a Blue Cross travel insurance but the benefits do not cover accommodations until after the expected end of the trip. Thankfully, Nikolaos is a dual Canada-Greece citizen. This means that the Greek government will take care of his medical care bills. But Stephanie said they have about $10,000 in extra expenses which include medications, medical expenses, hotel stays, and meals.
