A lot of visitors who receive medical treatment in Canada find themselves facing huge medical fees they cannot pay.

The Fraser Health Authority wrote off over $16 million in unpaid debts owned by non-Canadians over the last six years. In early 2018, Fraser wrote off three bills more than $100,000. One for a patient visiting from China, another from India and the third was an Indonesian.

The Indonesian patient had several outpatient visits and three hospital admissions. In the end, she was on the hook for more than $370,000 in medical bills but agreed to make $200 per month. It would take 155 years to pay off the debt at that rate. The Indonesian paid only $11,855 before the payment stopped.
