Your Canadian insurance is almost certainly not valid outside Canada, says the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT). Thus, you need to obtain supplementary travel insurance that covers life, health, vehicle, driving, disability, and trip cancellation before traveling out of Canada.

The president of the Travel Insurance Association of Canada, David Hartman said in 2010 that many countries are now requiring visitors to show proof of medical insurance when entering the country.
