Ever since they got married, Mehek Mazhar and her husband had been planning on going for hajj, a pilgrimage Muslims across the world make to Saudi Arabia.

Mazhar, 25, said they wanted to do it on their first year of marriage because it is a nice way to begin their life together.

But just days before the day they scheduled to leave to Saudi Arabia on August 11, 2018, the couple faced a “huge curveball” due to tension between the two countries.

The tension started when the Global Affairs Ministry of Canada requested for the release of jailed female activists which caused trade and travel tensions.

Due to the issue, Saudi’s state airline, Saudia announced that it would suspend flights to and from Canada from August 13, 2018. Although Mazhar’s flight to Saudi Arabia was scheduled before the date, their return flight was scheduled on August 26.

Mehek explained that she and her husband had to book an alternate trip home through Lufthansa airlines, however, their plans came with a hefty price tag.
