Switzerland Travel Insurance News

After Canada’s Parliament passed a new law that allowed for doctor-assisted death criticized as restrictive, a small number of Canadians travelled to Switzerland to end their own lives in 2016. According to a figure from Dignitas, a Swiss organization that assisted patients with chronic or terminal illness to die, 131 Canadians became members in 2016 but only five travelled to Switzerland to die.

Monique Hamel was one of the Canadians who turned to Dignitas but did not qualify for doctor-assisted death under the new Canadian law. She suffered a neurological disorder for 20 years and later left a two-page letter that criticized the politicians that enacted the restrictive law.

In a letter released by Dignitas, Hamel wrote that she will die with strangers who are more courageous and humane than Canadian doctors and decision makers.
